Anyone familiar with Mac laptop repair?

Need a hand with something? Here's a good spot to ask.

Anyone familiar with Mac laptop repair?

Postby Turbo » Wed Oct 29, 2014 8:42 pm

Long story short I was looking at porn one night and I spilled a drink on my laptop. Has anyone worked on one before? Thanks in advance.

I am a little familiar. My MacBook Pro was on the counter when Shelly accidentally knocked over her coffee (like a 20oz) which proceeded to douse my MacBook and caused it to shut off.

I grabbed my screw driver set and took the thing apart (and removed battery) and blotted most of the components to get the bulk of the coffee out. I left it all apart and open overnight to air dry. The next day I used rubbing alcohol o clean up all the connections I could. let it air dry yet again and the third day decided to fire it up and it worked.

Here is one link that more or less describes what I did, except I didn't remove the circuit board.

Thanks for that buddy! It's been a while so the circuit board is a little corroded is some spots. The hard drive is good so I might try to find a cheapo on Craigslist or hit a pawn shop. I'll try cleaning it and I'm not sure if it will do any good but hey, I have a couple hours to spare haha

yeah, from what I recalled when I found a different link, similar to the one I shared, the alcohol helps alleviate the corrosion or some such.

Is it working fine for now? Just curious if already dried and clean and HD working, why the need for a replacement.

If the hard drive is good, why replace it?

I would question, if the hard drive is good, and you have cleaned it to your best ability (and presumably posting from it), why do you feel the need to place your HD into another computer? Are some function of the laptop not working?

I can't get the stupid motherboard off because of a couple corroded screws. Still messing with it. #thestruggleisreal

So you realize that if you are pulling the laptop HD you'll need the same Mac type to put it in or it won't even work because of hardware specific drivers, like the MB and displays. Can't drop a MacBook into a MacBook Pro and expect it to start right up. It'll probably throw an error and then you are still stuck.

I think that Lee can do HD recovery and pull the files off for a fee.

FWIW, I have read that the newer macbook's are better suited for swapping HD's, as they are based on the intel chipset, and as such should be able to read between a MB and MBP, or vice versa.

Although a quick google search seems to add that while it's possible, it is recommended to have a later version of OSX installed.. I believe 10.6 or better.

OR, you could have Lee extract your data or buy a USB external HD case, slap yours in there and pull it off yourself.

Yeah it's all good, I had a 500gb hd in this one from the factory and put a 750gb in it. I found a donor laptop same year as mine and same configuration. The case is scratched up but it works and the price is right.

Then that should work fine I'd guess.

Good luck with the transplant. BTW, what generation laptop do you have?

I'm not sure what generation it is, it's the same as apple's producing now so I imagine it's the latest series. The new laptop I'm getting is identical to the one I have now. It even has 8gb of ram where as mine only has 4 so that's good. Got the guy down on the price too since it's pretty scratched up on the bottom, but I can swap my good bottom cover to the new one. Anyway, picking it up Saturday so I'll let you know how it goes.

Well my plan worked. Bought a used 2011 macbook pro with 8 gb of ram and swapped in my 750 gb hard drive and its just like my old computer again. Works great, posting from it now. Thanks for the help guys and gals.
